Sound-proofed garden offices and music practice rooms

Large Sound Proofed Garden Room Case Study 00

This case study exhibits the construction of a large music room - just less than a 30 sq. metre footprint - the maximum footprint area allowed without planning permission. Built to the highest soundproof specification. In addition to the comprehensive soundproofing, this garden music room was also built using the highest quality materials - cedar cladding applied to the eaves, a cedar soffit and integral lighting.

Step-by-step construction of this soundproofed music room

In the gallery below you can see a number of images documenting the construction of this soundproofed music room - both in our workshop and onsite.

  1. In the first images you can see the outer walls being assembled and the roof panels being constructed. Here you can see the rubber cushioning strips, they reduce acoustic coupling by making all surfaces more resilient and forms the structure of the sound dampening process.
  2. Next, the warren trusses are fitted over the door openings. Warren trusses are required on both the inner and outer walls as the weight of the double-walled roof and ceilings are too heavy to rest on a slippery surface like windows shutters.
  3. After being fitted the warren trusses are clad in boarding for extra strength and soundproofing. All the inside surface of the outer walls will be further clad with soundbloc boards but not before we are on-site as they are too heavy to transport.
  4. Following the installation of the warren trusses, the first lot of rockwool acoustic insulation is fitted to all exterior walls.
  5. During this time the soundproof shutters are manufactured.
  6. After staining the doors and cedar cladding it is at this point that we stop work in the workshop.
  7. Once on site we build the foundations and assemble the structure.
  8. At this point we build the inner acoustic sliding door shutters. There are two pairs of these doors and they are made to mimic the both the inner and outer walls themselves. This is done so that there are no weak links caused by openings.
  9. The building is then sealed against sound leakage in all directions with layer upon layer of soundproofing. Everything done twice for maximum effect.
  10. Finally the inner stud wall panels are fixed. At this point the structure already has a double skin of soundbloc with sheet rubber as a sandwich but it will then be filled with rockwool and further lined and plaster skimmed as below.

All Extra Rooms buildings, soundproofed or not, are properly plastered and finished off as a normal room in your home.
